Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often defined by cynicism, this show's earnestness struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who found the show and championed its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about watching this lovable family go about their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well be part of that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
