Climate Heating in New England More Rapidly Than Most Places on Earth, Analysis Shows.
The American area renowned for its colonial history, sweet syrup and frigid, snow-covered winters is undergoing a rapid change. A recent study finds that New England is heating up more quickly than nearly any other place on the globe.
Breakneck Pace of Change
The speed of warming in New England makes it the fastest-heating region of the contiguous United States, as per the research. The pace of its temperature rise has apparently accelerated significantly in the past five years.
"Temperatures is not only rising, it's accelerating," stated a primary researcher on the study. "It's really accelerated in recent years, which was unexpected to me. Our regional climate is shifting in a different trajectory, after being relatively stable for thousands of years."
The research positions the north-eastern US among the most rapidly heating zones in the world, together with the Arctic and sections of Europe and China. "New England is now heading towards being like the American South," the scientist noted.
Study Approach and Findings
For the analysis, researchers examined multiple data sources on daily temperature extremes and snowpack dating back to 1900. The analysis covered the six states of the New England region.
They discovered that New England has heated up by an average of 4.5 degrees Fahrenheit from 1900 to 2024. This far exceeds the worldwide mean, with the planet warming by around 1.3 degrees Celsius in the same period.
"That is extremely rapid warming, which is worrying," commented the study author.
Notable Warming Trends
- Minimum temperatures are rising more quickly than daytime temperatures.
- Winters are warming at twice the rate of other times of year.
- The harsh winter chill New England is known for is being diminished.
Oceanic Factors and the "Heat Battery"
A primary reason for this unusual build-up of heat may be shifts in the North Atlantic. The global seas are absorbing more than 90% of the surplus thermal energy trapped by emissions.
In the north Atlantic, an influx of cold, fresh water from Arctic ice melt is slowing down the Gulf Stream. This is pushing warmer water into the Gulf of Maine, congregating heat along the coastline that is then pushed inland by wind patterns.
"Surplus thermal energy from global warming is being held in the sea like a huge battery," explained the researcher. "This is now being discharged into the air and New England is a receiver of that energy."
Impacts on Culture and Weather
Once considered a mild climate haven, New England has suffered severe climate events in the past decade, including enormous floods and prolonged drought.
The rising heat poses a threat to iconic elements of regional life:
- Maple syrup production is being affected by changing climate conditions.
- Winter sports are impacted; an hockey tournament on frozen lakes has been canceled or moved multiple times due to unsafe ice conditions.
- Ski resorts have struggled because of inadequate snowfall.
"I reside just outside Boston and when I moved here in the 1990s I used to ice skate on the local ponds regularly," recalled the researcher. "That tradition has pretty much vanished from large parts of the southern part of the region."
