Democrats Denounce Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated anger after Donald Trump alleged a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be arrested and punished "through capital punishment" following their release of a controversial video.
The Content That Sparked the Debate
The recorded message, shared on earlier this week, features six Democratic lawmakers who previously acted in military or intelligence positions.
"As we did, you all made an oath to defend and defend this constitution," the officials stated in the short video. "And right now, the risks to our democratic foundation don't only come from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our laws are explicit, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can reject improper directives, you must decline illegal orders. No one has to follow commands that contravene the legal system or our constitution."
Donald Trump's Furious Reply
The recorded statement reportedly trigger a furious response from the former president.
On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate message, he wrote: "This represents really bad, and Dangerous to our Country. Their statements cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Representatives Respond
Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, House Democratic leader published a unified statement denouncing the remarks.
"Political violence has no place in this nation," they declared. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all acted our nation with tremendous patriotism and honor. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's appalling and risky calls for execution against elected officials, and urge GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."
The party representatives also stated that they had been in communication with protective services "to guarantee the security of these representatives and their families."
"Donald Trump must right away remove these extreme digital publications and retract his aggressive language before he leads to violence," the announcement stated.
Officials' Firm Reaction
The officials who participated in the video also released a declaration.
"We are veterans and national security professionals who value this nation and made an oath to protect and defend the national charter of the United States," they said. "This commitment is permanent, and we plan to keep it. No threat, coercion, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that important obligation."
"What's most telling is that the former president considers it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to restate the law," they added. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their backs as they carry out their oath to the national charter and duty to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They stated: "The entire nation must come together and condemn the ex-president's calls for our execution and political violence. This is a moment for principled stance."
Further Partisan Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's statements and shared on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the death of elected officials."
He added: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, every American – without partisan consideration – should censure this right away and absolutely."
The Conservative official defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", stating: "It is very risky, you have prominent officials of the legislature advising soldiers to disobey orders, I think that represents without precedent in American history."
The GOP official also allegedly told the press that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the offense of sedition" but that "lawyers have to parse the wording and decide all that."
Executive Branch Response
During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a media member, "Is the president want to kill members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson answered: "No."
"We should understand about what the president is responding to," the official declared. "You have active officials of the US Congress who conspired to orchestrate a video message to individuals of the American armed forces, to serving soldiers advising them to disobey the executive's proper directives."
She added: "The integrity of our defense system depends on the command structure, and if that chain of command is violated, it can result in fatalities, it can lead to confusion, and precisely what these congressional representatives ... are basically promoting."
