Three members of law enforcement perished and no fewer than 15 others sustained injuries in a seemingly premeditated detonation from gas at a country home in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The blast took place as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the property close to Verona to execute an removal notice for three siblings who were older adults.

The three victims who died served in the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals got detained at the site and another man who ran away after the incident was located soon after. The trio have been taken to medical facility.

The blast could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the scene displayed the property reduced to a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that efforts had been made to displace the three family members in the past.

Background and Motive

The head of the Veneto region, President Zaia, stated the farmhouse was subject to an court order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the property owners.

Negotiators had been sent to engage the family members who had secured themselves into the house. When the officers came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the residents set off the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander Claudio Papagno stated to reporters.

A propane tank had been set off, and the blast directly hit our members,” he added.

Incendiary devices were also located at the residence, the interior minister said.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the explosion consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

The prosecutor believed the explosion had occurred on a story above the entrance and told journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the incident, he mentioned personnel had “detected a whistling noise, probably the propane tanks being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants told Italian media, mentioning that the trio had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence the Defence Minister stood alongside other elected representatives in commemorating the three men who had been killed in the service of their country.
