Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern

When she finds Max in the psychic realm dubbed Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a cave that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies not within the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.

They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the event involved more than a defensive killing.

Like many elements of the final season, the significance of the events in the tunnel was first explored the live show the prequel play.

A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission

This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which reportedly teleported a U.S. Navy ship into a realm dubbed the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the captain, who returned in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to give to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their own interdimensional projects. The man in the cavern is that employee.

So, What's in the Case?

Considering what is known about the doctor's experiments, the briefcase would assuredly have samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—powers he would later pass on to the kids in Hawkins Lab.

Alternatively, the box could have held exotic matter that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. The prequel shows that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning after half a day as a different person. From then on, he fights the control of a sinister presence, much like how the character Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in the past.

Confronting Terror

His lasting fear associated with the mine shows how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. While he orchestrates the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains. Vecna uses fear, and the series is building toward a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his personal demons to fortify himself.

His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a critical advantage in the endgame conflict that awaits.
